Read MoreToday, military personnel in the field are constantly busy with the various spare batteries for their numerous electronic devices. To relieve them from this burden, we develop and industrialize a lightweight power generator. This E-Lighter can run on locally available fuel and connect to multiple devices.
The E-Lighter is a power generator that runs on locally available fuel, such as vehicle diesel or kerosene. At its heart is a thermoelectric generator that converts heat from the diesel/fuel combustion into electrical power. This means of power generation works without moving parts, which enables a robust operation and minimizes the need for maintenance. It has been designed to interface with multiple electronic devices, including radios and laptops, as well as military batteries and power managers.
The total device weighs 1.3 kg when empty and is the size of a large thermos bottle. It produces little heat and emits only minimal exhaust fumes. The E-Lighter can be refueled during operation from dedicated fuel bags (2 L, 2 kg) with dry-break couplings, providing 800 Wh of power without fuel spillage. The fuel bags can be refilled from standard (NATO) jerrycans.
We develop the E-Lighter as an alternative, user-friendly power source, in close collaboration with the Dutch MinDef to contribute to the operational effectiveness and extending the deployability of armed forces in terms of their range and flexibility. In order to become part of the modern equipment of the soldier in the field, this ‘bottle filled with electricity’ will be subjected to field testing.
